Join Us for "SAIKA DAY" – A Special Day of Play and Traditional Crafts for Families

About SAIKA

Located on the 7th floor of the Kyoto Handicraft Center, SAIKA is a unique hub featuring a curated selection of English picture books and a paid indoor kids' play area.

On weekends, many local families visit to relax and enjoy quality time together. It is a warm, community-focused space where international travelers and local residents can share the joy of play and stories in the heart of Kyoto.

Introduction

Experience the "Real" Kyoto alongside local families.
On March 29th, SAIKA invites you to a unique event where traditional Japanese craftsmanship meets everyday creative play. This is a perfect opportunity for international travelers to step away from the busy tourist routes and spend a relaxing afternoon in a warm, community-focused space—naturally blending in with local Kyoto families.

The Art Experience: Kyo-Karakami Workshop

What is "Karakami"?
Karakami is the traditional decorative paper used in Kyoto's historic temples and tea rooms. It is famous for its 1,000-year history and elegant, shimmering patterns.

The Experience
A single-impression art focused on the warmth of the touch. Use authentic mini-woodblocks and shimmering "Kira" ink (made from natural seashells) to press patterns with your palm. It is a creative and relaxing experience that both adults and children can enjoy.

Play Like a Local: Everyday Japanese Toys

Play area
While older children craft, the little ones can dive into a world of play that defines childhood in Japan. Our play area is filled with everyday Japanese toys that local kids adore—from iconic train sets to beloved characters.

It’s a natural way to mingle with local Kyoto families in a relaxed, cozy environment. No pressure to talk—just a  chance to experience the same fun as the local community.
