Kyoto Damascene

A Timeless Craft of Precision and Elegance

A Japanese artisan delicately inlays fine gold patterns onto a circular metal plate using traditional tools in the intricate process of Kyo-zogan (Kyoto metal inlay craftsmanship).
Kyoto Damascene is a refined form of traditional metal inlay art, unique to Kyoto and deeply rooted in Japanese aesthetics. At the Kyoto Handicraft Center, each Damascene accessory is an original creation, meticulously handcrafted in our in-house workshop by skilled artisans who have inherited this time-honored technique.

The process begins with a flat base of iron, onto which the artisan carves intricate patterns by hand using a small chisel and hammer. Into these fine grooves, threads of pure gold and silver are inlaid with incredible precision. This step requires not only exceptional technical skill, but also a strong sense of balance, beauty, and patience.

Once the design is complete, the piece undergoes a careful lacquering process. Layers of lacquer are applied and baked repeatedly to seal and protect the metalwork. This step not only enhances the durability of the piece but also gives the iron a rich black finish. A rust-proofing treatment is also performed to preserve the work for generations.

The final stage is where the artistry truly shines. Each piece is gently polished by hand, and delicate shading is applied to highlight the intricate details. This finishing touch imparts a soft luster and a sense of depth, transforming the item into a work of art that radiates elegance and quiet strength.

More than just decorative accessories, Kyoto Damascene pieces are expressions of cultural heritage and refined craftsmanship. Many feature traditional Japanese motifs such as flowers, birds, waves, or classical patterns—symbols that convey harmony, longevity, and serenity.

Whether as a personal keepsake or a meaningful gift, Kyoto Damascene adds a touch of timeless Japanese beauty to everyday life. We invite you to experience this extraordinary fusion of tradition and artistry for yourself.
