The kokeshi dolls we offer are known as sōsaku kokeshi—creative interpretations that preserve the traditional form while incorporating artistic freedom and modern sensibilities. Handcrafted primarily in Gunma Prefecture, each doll is carved from a single piece of wood, such as cherry or dogwood, and finished with care to highlight the natural grain and warmth of the material.

 

Unlike regionally defined traditional styles, creative kokeshi are not bound by specific rules. Artisans freely explore themes, colors, and shapes, resulting in pieces that are expressive, whimsical, and deeply personal. Some are adorned with delicate hand-painted motifs, such as cranes, plum blossoms, or flowing water patterns—symbols often associated with good fortune, longevity, and peace.
